Lake Tahoe’s smallest and only island

Fannette Island

Lake Tahoe’s smallest and only island has castle ruins on it. How did this all come about? To start, it wasn’t meant to have a castle but, of all things, a tomb. It all began with a captain of the sea, Captain Dick Barter, who had a chapel and a tomb built on the island. He intended to have himself buried in the tomb upon his death. A 19th century sea captain, who hailed from England, he enjoyed showing off his amputated toes, which he lost from frostbite. He actually amputated them himself. He never got to use the tomb, since he died and was lost at sea, off Rubicon Point in 1873.

Eventually, a wealthy woman by the name Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight, acquired the island when she had a mansion built on a nearby shore, in 1929.

She built a castle on the island and served tea to her visitors. One could and still can only get to the island by boat, kayaks or canoes.

Swimming is not an option since it is too dangerous due to frigid waters and boat traffic. The frigid waters is the reason Dick Barter lost his toes. He had been out in the water in a small boat when a storm struck and overturned it. He hung on to it until the storm passed and he made it to shore. By then the damage was done to his toes, so he chopped them off and, in turn, bragged about being toeless.

There is another way to get as close to the island as possible, without actually stepping foot on it and that is by riverboat, which gives you a tour of the lake as well as taking you around the island using that as a turning point to head back where the riverboat docks. We took the Lake Tahoe cruise called the Emerald Bay Cruise.

Lake Tahoe’s smallest and only island is called Fannette Island. One can see the top of the castle peaking out from most any angle.

Fannette Island is only a very small part of Lake Tahoe. There is so much more to see in gorgeous settings. I was only there for three days and saw as much as I could. I would recommend staying for at least one week and take your time exploring and enjoying many activities including relaxing by and in the clear blue waters.
